Sisterhood and Sunshine: Luxury, Culture, and Black Girl Magic in Colombia

Our recent Black Travelers International journey to Cartagena was nothing short of magical. Picture vibrant streets, golden sunshine, rhythmic music in the air—and a group of radiant Black women stepping into a space where culture, history, and Black girl magic beautifully collided.

For a few unforgettable days, Cartagena became our playground, our classroom, and our sanctuary. From luxury stays to soul-stirring cultural experiences, this trip wasn’t just a vacation—it was a celebration of sisterhood and heritage.

A City Steeped in Color and Culture

Cartagena welcomed us with open arms and sun-kissed skies. Inside the walled city, every corner told a story. We wandered through cobblestone streets lined with colonial facades in every shade of joy—from soft coral pinks to bold turquoise blues. The city pulsed with energy, yet offered moments of quiet reverence where the echoes of Afro-Colombian history could still be felt.

Our guided walking tour revealed hidden gems and powerful truths. We learned about the resistance and resilience of Black Colombians, visited cultural monuments, and honored the legacy of San Basilio de Palenque—a community founded by escaped Africans that still thrives today. It was more than educational—it was affirming.

From the moment we touched down, we showed up as our full, glorious selves. Whether we were sipping mojitos on rooftop terraces or dancing under the stars, the joy was real and the laughter abundant. We created space to shine, support, and simply be, surrounded by women who understood what it means to travel with purpose.

Highlights? Too many to count—but the catamaran cruise with music, wine, and endless selfies? Iconic. Our all-white welcome dinner in a candlelit courtyard? Pure elegance. And the impromptu dance circle in the street with locals cheering us on? A moment we’ll never forget.

Our Version of Luxury

Cartagena gave us luxury with soul. We stayed in a luxurious hotel in Boca Grande complete with personal concierge service, and rooftop views.   Spa treatments, personal drivers, curated shopping tours—we indulged in every detail.

This was Black luxury on our terms: culturally connected, deeply intentional, and designed to feed both body and spirit.

Culture That Touched Our Hearts

We didn’t just visit Cartagena—we connected with it. Our group immersed in Afro-Colombian dance workshops, learned the art of making traditional coconut rice, and supported Black women-owned businesses in the local markets. These weren’t just excursions—they were exchanges, filled with gratitude and growth.

Each conversation with locals, every dish we tasted, and every rhythm we moved to added another layer to our understanding and appreciation of Cartagena’s rich cultural tapestry.

A Trip We’ll Never Forget

This Cartagena experience reminded us that we belong everywhere, especially in places where our history lives and our joy is celebrated. It was proof that travel isn’t just about escape—it’s about expansion.

We left Cartagena with more than beautiful photos—we left with stories, friendships, and a deeper connection to the African diaspora. This trip was the epitome of Black girl magic, elevated by luxury, laughter, and love.
