10 Things to Know When Traveling to Morocco

Moroccan Drinks

Moroccan tea is amazing. Even though the temperature is warm, they drink tea throughout the day. The tea was so amazing that I brought some home with me.

Accommodations

Stay in a mixture of Riads and Hotels. A Riad is beautiful and offers a unique experience. The food in most Riads are amazing and better than the food in hotels. There is also the option to have dinner in a Riad, even if you are not staying there.

Note: Like most international hotels, you may need to bring your own washcloths as both a Riad and hotels do not have washcloths only hand towels and bath towels.

Toiletries

You may want to bring your own toilet tissue. As you travel around Morocco, you will discover that most public bathrooms do not have toilet tissue. There is usually someone that will offer you toilet tissue for a fee.

Moroccan Food

A salad in Morocco is not the typical salad that we have in the U.S. A salad in Morocco is a collection of individually plated cooked vegetables such as carrots, eggplant, beets, olives, and lentils. They are delicious and are usually served plated and shared by everyone at the table.

Theft

Pickpocketing is a thing. Be mindful of the monkeys in the square at Marrakech, as some are trained to separate you from your valuables.

Moroccan Currency

Bring cash as you will need cash to pay for taxis and navigate throughout the city. Few places outside of the stores will take Credit Cards, but all will take Moroccan money (Dirham).

Entertainment

The square in Marrakech is very busy and can remind you of Times Square. There are performers, music, and many vendors selling anything and everything. There are even women sitting in the middle of the square braiding hair. Here you can buy food, fresh squeezed juices, clothing, shoes, and all of the spices you can carry with you.

Best Time To Visit Morocco

The best time to visit is in September - March, especially if you are visiting the Sahara Desert. Outside of these months the temperature can be extremely hot.

Moroccan Dress

The typical Moroccan dress code doesn’t apply to tourists. As I have seen many tourists wear shorts and other casual clothing. However, if you are a female traveling alone, I would advise you to not wear clothes that are too revealing. Revealing clothing may bring extra unwanted attention.

Prayer

Throughout the day you will hear a loud announcement that signals prayer time. This is called Adhan in the Muslim culture and the timing is based on the position of the sun. This can be surprising at first but after a few days you won't even notice it.

A Trip To Morocco Has So Much To Offer

A visit to Morocco can offer a vast variety of experiences. On my first visit, I visited the areas of Rabat, Casablanca, Fes, and Marrakech in 7 days. My next visit will include the areas of Tangier, Chefchaouen, Sahara Desert, and Dades Valley.
