Pack healthy snacks for your flights and day tours

This is important, especially for western travelers.  The flights from US destinations are generally more than 12 hours.  In addition, most tours may take you out of the main city where there are less opportunities to buy food.  If you are able to purchase food, this may not be the food that you are accustomed to.  So, it is always best to have snacks that can be used to keep you energized, as you traverse the country.

Bring clothes that provide protection from the weather

The weather in some African countries can be extremely hot and humid.  It is best to always pack clothing that provides some protection from the sun.  Suggested items to bring include wide brimmed hats, sun glasses, and good walking shoes/sandals.

Know the immunization and visa requirements for any country that you are traveling to

Each country's entry requirements vary.  Some countries require a visa while others do not.  Some require certain immunizations while having recommended immunization requirements.

Below are some entry requirements for visitors to Ghana:

  • Yellow Fever is required to enter Ghana.  Yellow fever vaccination should be dated at least 10 days before arrival in Ghana.

  • COVID - A PCR test (not older than 48 hours) is required of unvaccinated and partially vaccinated travelers prior to travel.  Upon arrival, another COVID test is performed.  Fully vaccinated travelers are exempt from this requirement.

  • Passport valid for 6 months past your return date.  You will need one blank page for your passport/visa stamp.

  • A Visa is required to enter Ghana.

Know the location of medical facilities and hospitals

It’s best to know the location of any medical facilities in case you run out of your prescribed medication or suffer a medical emergency.

Know the voltage and frequency for your appliances

Standard voltage may vary from country to country. If the standard voltage in the USA is between 100 V - 127 V, you need a voltage converter in certain countries in Africa. You can also consider a combined power plug adapter/voltage converter.  To be sure, check the label on the appliance, as some appliances, such as tablets/laptops, photo cameras, cell phones, toothbrushes, etc. never need a converter.

Know if it is safe to drink the water

In some African countries it is not safe to drink the water for US tourists.  Know if you are advised to not drink the water.  This includes using ice cubes and using the water to brush your teeth.  If you are not sure then it is best to always use bottled water.

Know the traditional courtesies

Know the traditional courtesies so as not to offend locals when visiting a new country.  Courtesies can include the following:

  • Handshakes, using the right hand only are the common greeting.
  • Money (or anything else) should be given with the right hand only.
  • Visitors to remote villages or shrines should visit the local elder, taking a small gift such as a bottle of local schnapps.

Know of any rules on Photography

Some locals will be offended if you take pictures of them without their permission. Photography is also not permitted at the airport, government institutions, police stations, embassies, or at military and strategic sites.

Provide family members with a copy of your itinerary and contact information

Regardless of whether you are traveling to a country in Africa or any region.  It is always advisable that you provide your family in your home country with your itinerary and contact information.
